The Thymus gland is seen in the anterior part of the mediastinum. Tumors, cysts, and other abnormal growth can occur to the thymus gland. It forms a part of the lymphatic system in our body and is responsible for producing white blood cells called lymphocytes that can help fight infections. There are two types of thymus cancer, thymic carcinoma, and thymoma, and both aren’t common.

Causes: Unknown

The thymus gland is located near the airways in the middle of the chest. As they overgrow they tend to press on blood vessels and airways causing the following symptoms.

  • Breathing difficulties

  • Chest Pain

  • Cough with bloody phlegm

  • Loss of appetite

  • Trouble swallowing anything

  • Loss of weight

Depending on the stage of the disease, treatment would change. Surgery is the best way to make sure that the cancer is removed. At times the tumor, thymus gland, and the surrounding tissues are all removed together to prevent spread. If the spread is too bad, or the tumor is too large, the doctor might turn to radiation to reduce the size before he operates. Both before and after the surgery, doctors may advise radiation or chemotherapy. Radiation is where high energy x-rays are used to damage cancer cells. Chemotherapy is where drugs are used to kill cancer cells. Chemotherapy is given through the veins, making it easy to kill cancer cells that have spread throughout the body.

In certain cases, hormone therapy could be used to treat cancer that is influenced by hormones. The therapy is used to block the receptors to the hormones, preventing the growth and spread of cancer cells. Thymus cancer is usually rare, first, consult your doctor before taking any decisions.
