Chronic diarrhea can affect the patient’s life and health dramatically. Chronic diarrhea can be fatal if it persists for long. Treatments are there to get rid of Chronic Diarrhea.
Some of the reasons of diarrhea are irritable bowel syndrome, IBD (inflammatory bowel disease) like ulcerative colitis, improper digestion food and some infections. When food is not absorbed and digested properly it causes diarrhea. Some other reasons are also there.
Irritable bowel syndrome: One of the major and general reasons of chronic diarrhea is IBS. It causes cramps in abdomen. It makes a sudden change in the bowel movement. IBS grows after infection.
Inflammatory bowel disease: IBD like Colon disease and ulcerative colitis are common in chronic diarrhea. When the body’s immune disturbs the some parts of the digestive tract these types of problems grow up.
Different infections: Chronic diarrhea causes intestinal infections. These infections are visible in the people who travel a lot especially abroad. Contaminated food or beverage like raw milk etc. can also cause intestinal infections.
Endocrine disorder: Endocrine disorder occurs due to hyperthyroidism or overactive which results into weight loss and chronic diarrhea. If the nerves of the digestive tract are wounded then diabetes also can cause chronic diarrhea.
Allergic to food: Sometimes food sensitivity can cause chronic diarrhea. People who are sensitive to gluten may suffer from chronic diarrhea if they take wheat items. This will result to weight loss. The patients who are allergic to lactose they may also suffer from diarrhea if they take milk.
Medications: Some medicines and dietary supplements also cause chronic diarrhea. So, before taking medicines the patient must consult doctor or medical practitioner.
Tests: Some tests include stool and urine can specify the root cause of chronic diarrhea. To know lactose allergy and over developed small bowel can be examined through breath test. If these tests fail to find out the cause of diarrhea then other tests like X-ray like Colonoscopy or Sigmoidoscopy may be required. The patient’s doctor may refer to gastroenterologist.
Chronic diarrhea’s treatment is required to identify the main reason of this disease. Sometimes the treatment includes giving antibiotics to the patient. Lengthy treatments and medications are given in case of long term diarrhea like the patients who suffer from ulcerative colitis and colon disease. People who are allergic to lactose they have to avoid dairy products. Some anti-diarrhea medicines like Octreotide, Bismuth, Pepto-Bismol, Lomotil and Loperamide are given to treat diarrhea. Sometimes the diets can also be changed to check the patient’s condition after treatment. The patient has to take good amount of liquids.
Enough fluids should be taken when the patient is suffering from chronic diarrhea to avoid dehydration and malnutrition. Malnutrition can result into weight loss. If it doesn’t stop then it may become life threatening. When the patient is unable to take enough fluids, then liquids are given through veins.
