It is a condition where the cells develop unnaturally. The main reasons of Barrett’s Oesophagus are Acid reflux and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease. When the stomach acid throws back into the oesophagus acid reflux happens. The acid gastro-oesophageal reflux disease occurs when the acid floods and reacts on the oesophagus. In most of the cases Barrett’s Oesophagus occurs due to the acid reflux in the stomach.
Barrett’s Oesophagus has no specific indications. But the patients of this disease may suffer from Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease. Most common indication is the continuous heart burning sensation and digestion problem. Some other indications are prolonged cough, the urge of vomiting and discomfort and pain in swallowing food. If these problems persist for long then you may be at risk of Adenocarcinoma which is a cancer of Oesophagus.
Causes of Barrett’s Oesophagus
The acid reflux occurs when the Oesophagus controller becomes weak and flush out the stomach material into the Oesophagus. The acid reflux can occur any time in the life of a human. The common factors of this disease are:
2. Habit of smoking
3. Habit of taking alcohol
4. Unhealthy eating habits
Acid reflux occurs when the upper side of the stomach throws your diaphragm into the chest area.
Gastro oesophageal reflux disease is a condition when the stomach acid upsets oesophagus. The acid produced by stomach helps in digesting food. Our stomach can bear the acid reaction due to its tissues but oesophagus is intolerant. Sometimes this acid causes heart burn and pain. It is not sure that the people who suffer from acid reflux will catch Barrett’s oesophagus. When you suffer from this reflux for long time you may develop Barrett's oesophagus.
The motto of treatment of this disease is to lower the acid reflux. Some of the treatments are:
Change in lifestyle: Sometimes some changes in our habits help in giving good results. Some of the habit changes include no smoking, no drinking and loosing excessive weight. Taking small meals also help a lot in this disease. You should also avoid taking spicy food to get rid of acid reflux.
Medications: Take medicines to reduce the acid production. You can take histamine blockers to lower the indication of Barrett’s Oesophagus. When your acid production reduces you can lessen the medicine. The histamine blockers are safe and you can use it for your whole life.
Laparoscopic fundoplication: It is done to toughen the lower valve of the oesophagus. The upper part of the stomach is covered and stitched around the bottom of the oesophagus. This helps to strengthen the bottom side of the oesophagus. It also reduces acid reflux. The doctor operates through a laparoscope and makes small cuts in the abdomen to do the surgery.
Hernia repair: Surgery can be done to repair a hernia which will help to reduce the acid reflux. When hiatus hernia upsets chest, a chest surgery is required.
Removal of affected portion: If the biopsy report shows frequent changes in cells and going towards developing cancer then your doctor may advise to remove that portion. There are two ways to remove the portion. One is surgical and the other one is endoscopic mucosal resection.
