Adrenal glands are located above each kidney. Cancers of the adrenal gland are usually seen in the outer layers of the gland. It resembles a tumor, and a cancerous tumor is called an adreno-cortical carcinoma.


1. Age: Cancer may occur with age, and is diagnosed in age groups of 40-50 years.

2. Family History: May been seen in individuals who have a family history of Li-Fraumeni syndrome, multiple endocrine neoplasia, Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome, and familial adenomatous polyposis.

3. Smoking: heavy smokers are at an increased risk of developing adrenal cancer.


The symptoms differ based on the type of adrenal cancer you have:

A cancerous tumor producing too many hormones causes symptoms of:

  • frequent urination

  • muscle cramps

  • excessive thirst

  • high blood pressure

  • weakness

  • Tumors that secrete too much cortisol (Stress Hormone):

  • irregular periods

  • Depression

  • fat behind the neck and shoulders

  • easy bruising

  • hair growth on the face, chest, and back (in women)

  • weight gain around the chest and stomach

  • weakness in the legs

  • Tumors that secrete increased estrogen cause symptoms such as:

  • breast growth (in boys)

  • decreased sex drive and impotence (in men)

  • early maturity in girls

  • Tumors that secrete testosterone cause symptoms such as:

  • increased muscle mass

  • masculine voice

  • increased growth of facial and body hair

  • increased acne

  • irregular periods

Other Symptoms:

In certain cases, the tumors are large and are seen pressing on the nearby organs. This may result in pain in the abdomen or a feeling of fullness.


The main types of treatment for adrenal cancer are:

  • Surgery: Complete removal of tumor

  • Radiation: Treatment focused on changing the DNA of the cells

  • Chemotherapy: Drugs given intravenously to kill the cancer cells and prevent further spread

  • Other drugs
